Sermon Notes:

ISAIAH 43:1-7

A sermon reflection for January 10, 2010

God is so good! On this Sunday that includes an important—and a difficult—congregational vote, the Lord has appointed Isaiah 43:1-7 as our first Scripture reading. What a perfect word God brings to us on this of all Sundays! Let us consider the Word of God together.

But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel:

Christ, the Lord speaks; the Word of God speaks throughout the words of God.

Christ has created and formed us for Himself.

Compare with Genesis 1:1 and 2:7: Creation moves from the general to the personal.

"Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

“Fear not; do not be afraid” is the most quoted teaching of the Lord in the Bible.

Christ has redeemed (paid the price) for us by rescuing us from sin, death, and the devil.

The Lord knows us by name; we belong to Him.

We are not alone in the universe, not alone in our lives and decisions.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

Christ reminds them of what He did for them at the Red Sea and the Jordan River.

We are to recall the faithfulness of Daniel’s friends facing their fiery test.

God will see us through our trials, too, as we remain faithful to Him.

For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of
Israel, your Savior.

God’s words echo the great preface to the Ten Commandments.

God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit moves Scripture, one God, one seamless Word.

I give
Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you.

Ultimately, God gave Himself as our ransom, exchanging His life for our lives.

Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life.

This represents one of the boldest statements in the OT of God’s love for us.

Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth,

Those whom the Father brings to the Son, the Perfect Israelite, Jesus Christ, will include people from every corner of the earth, Jew and Gentile.

everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made."

God has created, called, and formed us for His glory. Glorifying God is the singular purpose of our redeemed, rescued lives. How then shall we live, speak, and act?
